The Orang Asli consist of 19 ethnic sub-groups officially classified for administrative purposes as Negrito, Senoi and Aboriginal Malay. They number 133,000, representing a mere 0.7% of the national population. In spite of their small number, the Orang Asli are not homogeneous, each group having its own language and culture and, most importantly, perceiving itself as different from the others. They also have different ways of life and livelihoods, with some groups (e.g. Orang Laut, Orang Seletar and Mah Meri) living close to the coast as fisherfolk, some (Temuan, Jakun and Semai) adopting permanent agriculture, planting cash crops such as rubber, oil palm or cocoa, while many (around 40%, including Semai, Temiar, Che Wong, Jah Hut, Semelai and Semaq Beri) continue to live close to or within forested areas and engage in swidden farming, hunting and gathering. Some groups from the Negrito branch (e.g. Jahai and Lanoh) are still semi-nomadic, preferring to take advantage of the seasonal bounties of the forest. With the growth of urban centers and their intrusion into the lifestyle of the Orang Asli, a fair number now also live in urban areas and are engaged in both waged and salaried jobs.

The extensive root systems of the plants that occupy a mangrove swamp are perfectly suited for its muddy environment; vertical roots and buttresses that support it during the ebbing of the time while anchoring it firmly in the ground. The combination of roots and mud also help maintain the shoreline, by providing a sponge for sedimention that flows from it before restoring it back in a process called accretion. As the ground is made up of mud, there is little air flow in the soil, contributing to the pungent odour that greets first time visitors to its thick environment.
In the mangrove forests of Malaysia, the mangrove palm, or Nipah, dominates the plant diversity. These unique palms are characterised by their large fern-like leaves. The Nipah palm has many uses; its leaves can be weaved into baskets, mats and awnings of traditional homes. It also produces tannins that are used to cure wood, make medicines or even be distilled into an alcoholic beverage and sugar. While mangroves do not get as much recognition as their rainforest cousins, they have an equally important part to play in the entire ecological cycle, ultimately essential to the well being of Malaysia's natural environment.

The ecoregion covers an area of 3,600 square kilometers (1,400 square miles) on both the eastern and western sides of the peninsula. The peat swamp forests have formed over hundreds of years, as sediment and organic debris deposited by rivers are trapped behind mangroves, gradually building up a layer of waterlogged, acidic, nutrient-poor soil. These forests are less diverse than the surrounding Peninsular Malaysian rain forests, but are home to many endangered animals.

The existence of these townships also opens up a doorway of possibilities for avid nature-lovers to explore montane rainforest, as paved roads that spiral into these highland towns enable the creation of accessible trails into these rich nature repositories. Some of Peninsular Malaysia's most fascinating insect, reptile and amphibian species are found in these mountains, such as the flower-like orchid mantis or Hymenopus coronatus and red mountain racer, or Elaphe porphyracea laticincta. In Peninsular Malaysia, the three major highland destinations are Cameron Highlands, Genting Highlands and Fraser's Hill.

Up to 300m above sea level. There are some pockets of lowland forests near urban centres such as the Sungai Buloh Reserve, Kanching Forest Reserve (part of which is the popular Templer's Park) and Ampang Forest Reserve outside Kuala Lumpur. These areas, however, are under intense pressure from development and these islands of natural lowland forests are shrinking rapidly. Beautiful and relatively undisturbed LDF can be found at Taman Negara in Peninsular Malaysia. It is riches in wildlife. It can be humid and hot. The deep forest dont have mosquitoes.
Rainforests are very dense, warm, wet forests. They are havens for millions of plants and animals. Rainforests are extremely important in the ecology of the Earth. The plants of the rainforest generate much of the Earth's oxygen. These plants are also very important to people in other ways; many are used in new drugs that fight disease and illness.
It is almost always raining in a rainforest. Rainforests get over 80 inches (2 m) of rain each year. This is about 1 1/2 inches (3.8 cm) of rain each week. The rain is more evenly distributed throughout the year in a tropical rainforest (even though there is a little seasonality). In a temperate rainforest, there are wet and dry seasons. During the "dry" season, coastal fog supplies abundant moisture to the forest.
However, the opportunities to spot exciting wildlife may vary as the presence of people is a clear indicator of ‘scared' wildlife. On the other hand, rainforests further out of town are more pristine and exhibit a wider range of wildlife species to spot. This is augmented by the fact that these places are often relatively unexplored. Herping expeditions to such places may require the assistance of guides whenever well-trodden pathways are unavailable. Every state in Malaysia has its share of jungle and rainforest to explore, but the richest areas for wildlife are found in Pahang; this is where a long, mountainous range divides the east and west sides of Peninsular Malaysia.
Another fantastic state is Perak; a land of rich valleys filled with greenery. Finally, the northeastern region of Johor is home to the beautiful Endau-Rompin National Park. In terms of herpefauna, certain species are inclined towards broad sections across the country, while others may be found in only one locality. For example, the extreme north of Peninsular Malaysia is where you can find some species of snakes known more frequently to Thailand, such as Calloselasma rhodostoma, or the Malayan pit-viper, (really a misnomer as Malaysia only has a small area with this species) and Chrysopelea ornata, the golden tree snake.

Malaysia's population comprises many ethnic groups, with the Malays at 50.4% making up the majority. By constitutional definition, Malays are Muslims who practice Malay customs (adat) and culture. Therefore, technically, a Muslim of any race who practices Malay customs and culture can be considered a Malay and have equal rights when it comes to Malay rights as stated in the constitution. There also exist aboriginal groups in much smaller numbers on the Peninsula, where they are collectively known as Orang Asli.
23.7% of the population are Malaysians of Chinese descent, while Malaysians of Indian descent comprise 7.1% of the population. The majority of the Indian community are Tamils but various other groups are also present, including Malayalis, Punjabis and Gujaratis. Other Malaysians also include those whose origin, inter alia, can be traced to the Middle East, Thailand and Indonesia. Europeans and Eurasians include British who settled in Malaysia since colonial times, and a strong Kristang community in Malacca. A small number of Cambodians and Vietnamese settled in Malaysia as Vietnam War refugees.

Beautiful quaint fishing villages dot the coastal line of Malaysia. A visit to one of these villages should not be missed. This is where one may breathe and drink in the simple and yet colourful lives of Malaysia’s fishermen.
Here, fishermen normally put out to sea at dawn and return in the early afternoon to sell their catch on the beach. You may enjoy the experience of haggling over prices and the sorting and weighing of the catch that provide an interesting cacophony against the picturesque backdrop of gaily painted boats lining the beach.
Usually built close to River Mouth (Kuala Sungai). Chances of finding a guesthouse here is slim.

The Arabic honorific of the state is Darul Ta'zim ("Abode of Dignity'). It is surrounded by Pahang to the north, Malacca and Negeri Sembilan to the northwest, and the Straits of Johor to the south which is divided by the international border between Malaysia and the Republic of Singapore. Located south in Johor, Taman Negara Endau Rompin is no less magnificent and some say, even more pristine and beautiful. However, it is far less accessible as conventional vehicles will find it tough to traverse the dirt tracks needed to reach the entrance. Still, this may be the key factor in preserving the park's natural heritage from the destruction that results from a glut of visitors.

Langkawi, Malaysia is warm and sunny all-year-round. Humidity is high and the annual average temperature is 25C - 32C. The island was named after two Malay words - ‘lang’ (eagle) and ‘kawi’ (reddish brown), hence the imposing eagle statue at Dataran Lang (Eagle Square), welcoming visitors who arrive on the island through the Kuah Jetty.
There’s so much to see and to do in Langkawi; diving and snorkeling in the pristine water filled with rich marine life tops the list for most people. You can also take a cable car ride up the mountain that offers a breathtaking 360 degrees panoramic view of the islands, the rural lowlands and the seas as far as Thailand. For nature lovers, you can explore the lush forests and appreciate the unique wildlife of the islands from a different perspective.
Public transport on Pulau Langkawi is limited, so you usually need to call a cab or rent a car, motorbike or bicycle - all are readily available.
There’s a huge variety of food available on Pulau Langkawi, ranging from cheap and good hawker food to a splurge for gourmet food in the restaurants. The famous laksa is not to be missed.
Langkawi, Malaysia is a duty-free shopping destination. Other than cameras, branded items, electronic gadgets, shop for lovely silk batik, handicraft and local products, especially those from the fishing villages.

Tanjung Tuan is located a short distance down south from Port Dickson Town, a popular beach-side destination for city folks. Tanjung Tuan is essentially a small cape of coastal forest with mangrove patches that was spared development and gazetted into a park for bird-watching, especially to watch raptors migrating. Tanjung Tuan is composed of dry forest with small mangrove swamps at certain parts. If you use the two main jungle trails in the forest that start from the lighthouse, you will eventually reach some beautiful beaches.

Penang is one of Malaysia's main tourist draws. Its beaches are nice, though a little lacklustre when compared to those in some other Malaysian states, but this is more than compensated for by the island's rich multicultural history which is full of Chinese, Malay, Indian, and European influences. Penang is also well known for being the "food paradise" of Malaysia.

Penang's highest point is Penang Hill, which is also known as Flag Hill or 'Bukit Bendera'. At around 800-meters high, the hill offers a cooling environment and magnificent view of the island surroundings on a clear day. Because of its location, the hill is not as pristine as one would expect, with a fair bit of commercialisation and development. However, the hill remains a good place to search for wildlife and appreciate nature while on Penang Island. Visitors can choose to hike up using various trails or ride up by tram or a 4WD vehicle.

Located on the outskirt of Ipoh and before the town of Batu Gajah, this is another structure which reminds us of our colonial past. Built by a Scotsman, William Kellie Smith, a multi-millionaire who made his fortune in the late 19th century Malaya from rubber. However, there's little evidence of a rubber plantation around the castle as most of it had already been converted into palm oil plantation. Legend has it that this castle was unfinished because of the death of William's wife who were said to have plunged to her death from the top of this castle. Distraught, William decided to abandon the castle and return home to Scotland.
After being abandoned itself by the Perak government for many years, it has been turned into a tourist attraction. The castle used to be full of graffiti and was believed to be a junkies haunt. After a recent refurbishment, the authority see it fit to charge an admission fee for this place. Gone are the graffiti on the walls but the roof remain tarnished. Much of the structure of the castle remains in good condition and it's kind of the authority to built safety bars to avoid unsuspecting visitor from plunging down of the gaps in the castle.

Kuala Selangor is a coastal town located an hour away from Kuala Lumpur, home to a protected mangrove sanctuary and historical hill. This charming town attracts many visitors over the weekend who come to enjoy the rich seafood culture, see fireflies twinkle by the river or catch the panoramic view from Bukit Melawati. The town, which has a thriving fishing industry, is located directly by the mouth where the Selangor River meets the sea. A prime attraction for visitors are the tame silver leaf monkeys, a beautiful and gentle species that usually keep away from people.
The town caters largely to tourists coming this way en route to Kelip-Kelip at Kampung Kuantan or local travellers on a trail of seafood binging. Kuala Selangor town is not particularly big and one can easily walk around without a map or a guide. There are a number of cheap food outlets and a couple of fast food joints. It is also possible to walk to the Kuala Selangor Nature Park and Bukit Melawati for a visit.
It's a quiet town at the river mouth of the Selangor river. The city center is near the new bridge. There are also some shops and there is the old bus station. Near the mosque there are also a lot of shops, but the old shops are favourite. Specially to the Malaysians, who come here every weekend from Kuala Lumpur to see the picturesque lighthouse, Silverleaf Monkeys and the fireflies.

It is one of the must visit place of interest (POI) in Malaysia. You will be taken on a boat ride along the Selangor River where the fireflies inhibit around the branches of the “Berembang” trees along the riverbank. Here, up to thousands of fireflies may group together on a tree, beginning their display about one hour after sunset. A really bright display lasts for about two to three hours, continuing at lower levels until dawn.

Pulau Ketam is a flat island made completely of mangrove swamps off the coast of Klang in Selangor. On this island sits a Chinese fishing village that has been around for more than a century, surviving two massive fire outbreaks in 1967 and 1972 respectively. Today, the island is a tourist attraction and popular venue for seafood among locals. During low tide, the shores are swarmed with thousands of tiny blue crabs, which is why the name of the island translates to 'Crab Island' in English.
